Inspect every plank before installation — installed planks with visible defects are not covered. Use a flooring adhesive approved for LVT and follow the adhesive maker's instructions together with this guide.
1. Where you can install
- Indoors only. Not outdoors, not in bathrooms, and not over soft or compressible surfaces such as carpet.
- Order 10–15% extra (more for herringbone). Mix planks from several boxes.
2. Temperature
- Keep the planks, subfloor and adhesive at 59–86°F (15–30°C) for 48 hours before, during and 48 hours after installation.
- After installation, keep the room between 55°F and 95°F (13–35°C).
3. Tools
LVT adhesive, notched trowel, floor roller (at least 100 lb / 45 kg) and a hand roller, chalk line, level, square, utility knife, cutting mat, tape measure, hygrometer, heat gun, safety glasses and gloves.
4. Subfloor
- Clean, dry, level and solid. Flatness within 3/16 in over 10 ft, or 1/8 in over 6 ft. Fill and sand all imperfections. Remove old adhesive without solvent-based removers.
- Concrete: fully cured (at least 6 weeks after pouring), free of dust, paint, grease, oil, sealers and curing compounds. Test with calcium chloride (ASTM F1869) and in-situ RH probes (ASTM F2170). If moisture emission is above 6 lb or RH above 90%, apply a moisture-control layer first.
- Wood: fasten loose or squeaky areas, keep fastener heads flush, replace damaged panels. Subfloor panels at least 1 in (25 mm) thick. Crawl spaces must be dry and ventilated, with at least 18 in clearance under the joists.
- Existing tile, terrazzo or seamless floors: well bonded, clean and dry; fill grout joints and low spots with a suitable leveler.
- Radiant heat: floor surface never above 85°F. Hold the floor at 70°F or less for 24 hours before, during and 48 hours after installation, then raise the temperature in small steps. Leave a 7–10 mm gap at walls, covered by trim.
5. Install
- Mark the center of the room at both ends and snap a chalk line. Divide the distance to the wall by the plank width; if the last row would be less than half a plank, move the line by half a plank width.
- Spread the adhesive with the trowel and allow the open time shown on the adhesive label before laying planks.
- Start along the chalk line. Complete each row, including the cut end piece, before starting the next. Place cut ends toward the wall.
- To cut: lay the plank on the last installed plank, mark against a straight board held at the wall, score with the knife and snap. Mark and cut around pipes and door trim.
- Continue to the far wall and cut the last row to fit.
- Roll the whole floor with the 100 lb roller; use the hand roller where the large roller cannot reach.
- Keep traffic light for 24 hours. Refit baseboards fastened to the wall, and seal around toilets, tubs and showers with silicone.
6. Replacing a plank
Warm the damaged plank with a heat gun, cut a corner with the knife without cutting the subfloor, and lift it slowly while heating. Warm the adhesive on the subfloor, glue the new plank in place and roll it.
7. Care
- Sweep regularly with a soft broom; put mats at entrances.
- Clean with a neutral pH cleaner — no strong detergents.
- Protect from heavy furniture with pads; never drag heavy items. Use soft rubber wheels.
- Avoid long periods of strong direct sunlight.
